Karma Ventures participates in Mindgard's $30M Series A funding round

Mindgard, an AI security company headquartered in Boston and London, has raised $30 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Album VC, with participation from EstVCA member Karma Ventures and existing investors .406 Ventures, Atlantic Bridge, IQ Capital and Lakestar.

Founded in 2022, Mindgard was spun out of more than a decade of AI security research at Lancaster University in the UK, home to what the company describes as the world's largest AI security lab. It is led by CEO James Brear, with co-founder Peter Garraghan, whose research underpins the platform.

Enterprises are deploying AI faster than the tools meant to secure it. Attackers can hide instructions inside ordinary-looking input to make a model ignore its own rules, extract the data or the model sitting behind it, or push an AI agent into actions it was never meant to take. Conventional application security was not built for any of this, and checks run before launch miss it, because the weaknesses only appear once a system is live and handling real input. Mindgard finds the AI already running inside an organisation, attacks it the way an adversary would, and keeps testing it in production rather than once before release.

The approach has produced findings that are public. Mindgard has uncovered and disclosed more than 150 high-impact security and safety vulnerabilities in widely used AI products, including a zero-day code execution flaw in Cursor IDE, a trusted workspace vulnerability in Google Antigravity and guardrail failures in ChatGPT's image generation. Each finding feeds back into the platform's knowledge base.

Kristjan Laanemaa, Founding Partner at Karma Ventures, on research-led technology already proven inside demanding Fortune 2000 enterprises: "That combination of a defensible research moat and proven enterprise pull is rare."

The round follows accelerating deployment across the Fortune 2000 in financial services, pharmaceuticals, gaming, digital services, semiconductors and healthcare. Mindgard will use the funding to scale its product, engineering, sales and marketing teams.

As AI moves out of pilots and into systems connected to internal data and critical workflows, securing it is becoming a discipline of its own rather than an extension of existing cybersecurity tooling, and one drawing serious investor attention.
